Bison Day

Today was Bison Day.  We found them in Custer State Park in South Dakota.

Tatanka is the Lakota word for bison.  We found a few hundred of them today in the park.  Indeed, we were in our car but surrounded by them.  Yes, we were afraid to step out of the car.

They look you in the eye when they approach you.  It is a bit unsettling.

They definitely were not afraid of us.

Custer State Park is perfect for the bison.  The rolling prairie and an abundance of grassland make for a good life for them.  What a great park.

As you watch a herd of bison, one can only imagine how it looked when 30 million of them roamed the Great Plains.
