Badlands and Black Hills

It has been 45 years or more since Dianne and I drove west from the Lake Minnewaska area to the Badlands and Custer National Parks of South Dakota .  Today, we drove west once again, for 500 miles.

We started west, following all of those Wall Drug signs.  We got to Wall, South Dakota late in the afternoon.

There were some interesting sights along the way.  Canby, Minnesota is a nice, clean-cut town.  Larry, you would be pleased with how nice it is.  Just west of Canby, we came across one of the large wind farms of Minnesota.

We drove for miles and miles, wind towers everywhere.  There were well over 100 towers.

We entered South Dakota and swung down to Sioux Falls before heading west to Chamberlain on the Missouri River.

Lewis and Clark camped here on their Voyage of Discovery.  Today, there is a beautiful statue towering over the site.

Dignity, of Earth and Sky

Dignity (a.k.a. Dignity of Earth & Sky) is a sculpture on a bluff overlooking the Missouri River near Chamberlain, South Dakota.[2] The 50-foot (15.24 meter) high stainless steel statue by South Dakota artist laureate Dale Claude Lamphere[3] depicts an Indigenous woman in Plains-style dress receiving a star quilt. According to Lamphere, the sculpture honors the culture of the Lakota and Dakota peoples who are indigenous to South Dakota.

We pressed on to Badlands National Park where we viewed bighorn sheep, deer, bison, and prairie dogs.

We are staying in Rapid City tonight.  Stand by for more pictures tomorrow evening.
